Current Opportunities For ALL Kindergarten - 3rd Grade Students
EOU Student Writers’ Workshop
The EOU English/Writing program hosts the Student Writers’ Workshop for young writers in grades 3-12 on the second Saturday of every March on the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande. This year’s event is March 14, 2020. FridayPlus will be taking a bus with four adult chaperones. Parents are encouraged to join us. Parents may ride the bus pending space and an approved background check.
Students from across Eastern Oregon, along with teachers, parents, and chaperones, participate in an opening session, write in concurrent sessions with topics such as journalism and poetry, eat lunch in the EOU cafeteria, and celebrate their writing in an open mic. All participants are invited to submit their writing to the workshop anthology.

Materials required: Paper, pencils, and lunch will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring any additional writing material, snacks, water bottles, and jackets.
Cost: FridayPlus will cover the $30 per student registration fee

FridayPlus Baker School District 5J/Baker County YMCA Chess Tournament
You are invited to the FridayPlus Baker School District 5J/Baker County YMCA chess tournament on Friday, March 6, 2020, at Brooklyn Primary School. Students in grades K-8 are invited to this local tournament. Players of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are invited to attend. Sportsmanship is a must.
Parents are invited to watch but may not assist in any games. The tournament is anticipated to end at approximately 4:00 pm. Prizes awarded based on division and number of participants. Pairings will, initially, be based on grade level/age but will depend on wins/losses as the tournament proceeds.

Chess for Success

Join us to learn the greatest game of strategy of all time - CHESS! Through a partnership with Chess for Success, chess lessons and practice sessions will be offered weekly until March. Players of all levels, from beginner to advanced, are invited to attend.
Brooklyn Primary chess players will meet in the Brooklyn Primary School library.
Students will have the opportunity to compete in the Regional Chess for Success tournament in February at Hermiston High School and may qualify to participate in the State Chess for Success tournament in Portland on March 13th. There may be at least one local tournament in Baker City. Students will be required to follow the expectations set forth by the program and school district as well as remain respectful and courteous at all times. Sportsmanship is a must.
